Overtime Averaging

An employer can now average overtime pay or time-off entitlements over a 52-week period.

Grievance & Arbitration

Labour Code changes have restricted arbitrators’ power, and have given more power to the UCP-appointed Labour Board.

Injured Workers' Benefits

Employers no longer have to contribute to health benefit plans (which typically also covers family) for injured workers who are off work due to an injury.

Reinstating Injured Workers

Employers are no longer obligated to re-employ injured workers when they are ready to return to work.

Safety Training

Onus to ensure workers are adequately trained to protect their health and safety has dramatically shifted from away employers and onto workers.

Medical Review Panels

Medical panels used by the workers’ compensation system to provide an impartial, independent decision-making process have been abolished.

Joint Health and Safety Committees

More workplaces are now exempted from having a JHSC, no training requirements for committee members, and more limited JHSC involvement in workplace decisions.

Right to Refuse Unsafe Work

Your right to refuse to perform any work you think will injure you or your fellow workers has been rolled back.

Silencing the Government's Critics

New limits placed on peaceful protest and free speech.
